Until a few years ago, it has been complete taboo to talk about mental health issues. Today we are in a much better position but still have to go a long way because the stigma that revolves around mental health is high. I was having a conversation with a friend of mine who was talking about the importance of doing something about taking care of our mental health. Most of us are talking about mental health but we hardly talk about things that work in improving the state of our mental health.
I have been in the situation myself. I am today listing out things that have helped me. So let’s see what are the five easiest and most possible way to improve our mental health like nothing else.
5 Things that Work in Improving Mental Health
1. I Started Reconnecting with Family and Friends
When you’re mentally stressed and exhausted it is normal to push away your loved ones. It seems like the best option to keep your loved ones away as you don’t want to hurt them or make them worry about you. However, the truth is you need your loved ones near you more than ever during this times.
Stop spending too much time on virtual things and get connected with real people. Do some interesting activities together, have dinner or lunch with a friend or a colleague. Volunteer to do some community works. These activities not just help one feel better but will also help establish the human connection we have been missing out on!
2. Start Doing more Physical Activities
Physical activity keeps your mind and body occupied and at the same time help you rejuvenate like no other. As an added advantage you’ll get to keep yourself fit. Okay, now doing physical activities and working out might seem like a very difficult task for many of us, to help you with that, I might suggest you start listening to some amazing music or podcast while working out. This will motivate you to get the task done much effortlessly.
3. Start Learning some new and Interesting Skills
We all have some area of interest that we might not have had the opportunity to pursue. No worries, it’s time for you to go ahead with these desires of yours. When you learn to do something new, your mind will be peak with lots of interest and at the same time, it will develop your self-confidence and self-esteem. When you carry forward this new habit further you get a sense of purpose in your life. This will also enable you to connect with like-minded people.
4. Live in the Moment
We human beings are more concerned about our past and so in love with the future that we forget to live the life we got in our hands at this very moment. A successful life is living mindfully in the present and enjoying each and every moment we are thrown into. This practice is difficult but it takes off the unnecessary stress and pressure from your mind and helps you live your life happily.
5. Helping Others
It is like giving back to the society or universe. This practice will give you more happiness and satisfaction than anything else could possibly give. You will get the true hang of it only when you try it yourself. It can be as simple as helping an elderly person carry their bags or helping someone with their DIY project or helping out a kid learn. Helping others always do not need to be fancy and high budget. It is the intention that matters.
Get started and try doing these stuffs regularly. It will be a slow process but with practice we can attain a better place mentally and that’s all matters
These five things have helped me greatly in taking my mind off smaller things. However, if at all you think it’s a bigger issue, contact a professional. Always seek professional help. It will definitely help you for good.
