Planning road trip with kids?? Check out what all I did to make sure we had some awesome time!!

Travelling is important for everyone. It helps in relaxation from the daily routine and is a great learning experience for the kids. We were a couple who loved travelling, with kids it has been reduced to a great extent. But to make sure the kids don’t miss out on the learning we get from travelling every now and then we try to go on a vacation. Be it to their grandparents in Kolkata, some relative in some other city or to a new place. We have tried flight and smaller road trips with Miss G and baby T after baby T’s birth. This time we planned to go a little farther.  Today I am sharing with you some points to keep in mind when you are planning road trip with kids.

Road Trip with kids- Tips to follow

Planning the trip

Keep in mind that kids have a very small amount of patience time and do not like being stuck at the same place for long hours. While planning a road trip choose a destination which is not very far.

If you still want to go to a place which has long travel time, consider taking breaks in between multiple times. Yes, you will have to let go the estimated time to travel calculated by google maps 🙂

For Example : Our road trip recently to Almora was actually 8 hours drive from Delhi. However, with multiple breaks for the kids to relax, rest, eat and be comfortable we took 12-13 hours once side.

Keep lots of food for snacking

Always keep enough snacks and water for the kids with you.

List of things I kept for my kids( This is only the food/water part)

  • Boiled cooled water – for baby T
  • Formula Milk Powder
  • Cerelac
  • Fruits –  Banana and Orange
  • Boiled veggies like carrot, beans , peas and potato
  • Chocolates
  • Chips ( Dont judge me here.. I would rather feed my kids junk than to keep them starving )
  • Boiled Egg
  • Sweets like Barfi and Laddoo
  • Biscuits
  • Wafers
Pit stop at random dhaba for pahadi maggi .. who likes having maggi in the mountains???

All these were kept in a bag pack which was easily accessible during the travel.

Drive at Night

If you start really late at night or very early in the morning there are high chances that your children will be sleeping for more time. Hence, you will be able to cover longer stretch of distance during these hours.

Not Night .. This is at 5 AM in the morning. We were half way by this time

We started at 4 AM in the morning and had made the kids wear the clothes for journey the night before so that in the morning we just needed to pick them up and go. No need to wake them up to change clothes.

Keep toys to keep them busy

Catch hold of some of your child’s favorite toys and keep them in the car with you at easy reach. Give them one toy each time they get a little restless. It can keep them busy for sometime.

*Tip* : Don’t keep toys which can be dismantled. You don’t want them to be looking for pieces while you are driving.

Take breaks

For baby T it was her first long drive trip after she has started sitting and started noticing the surrounding. Keeping her at one place was difficult. To make sure she doesn’t get tired and cranky, we took breaks for 5-10 mins every 2 hours to

  1. Let her stretch herself on the car seat.
  2. I even massaged her legs while on break.

We made sure we stopped at places where Miss G also could enjoy some fresh air and have some fun. Check out the video below where she saw a real hen and was super excited to see it.

Taking a break under a tree shade. Gaurika saw a hen here.

We took no hurry and completed our journey in 12 hours with everyone being happy and excited.

Hope the pointers help you organize your fun trip with you kids. Let me know if you have any more fun ideas on-the-go
